Taking a tour of an assisted living community is one of the most important steps in finding the right fit for your loved one. While a tour will give you a visual sense of the environment, the real insights come from the questions you ask. Below is a list of key questions to help guide your visit and make sure you’re getting the full picture.

Care & Staff

  • What level(s) of care does your community provide?

  • How is care customized for each resident?

  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio during the day and overnight?

  • Are staff trained to handle memory loss or dementia?

  • Is there a nurse on-site 24/7?

  • How do you respond to medical emergencies?

Living Spaces

  • Are rooms private or shared? What floor plans are available?

  • Can residents bring their own furniture and belongings?

  • Are rooms equipped with kitchenettes or refrigerators?

  • How often is housekeeping and laundry provided?

Meals & Dining

  • How many meals are served daily, and are they included in the monthly fee?

  • Can meals accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences?

  • Can I see a current menu or sample a meal?

  • Are snacks available outside of mealtimes?

Activities & Social Life

  • What types of activities and outings do you offer each week?

  • Do you have an activity calendar?

  • How do you encourage social participation among residents?

  • Can family members join events or dine with residents?

Health & Wellness

  • How are medications managed and administered?

  • Can you coordinate care with our current physicians?

  • Are regular health assessments conducted?

  • If care needs increase, can the resident remain in the community?

Costs & Contracts

  • What is the base monthly cost, and what does it include?

  • How are care charges determined and billed?

  • Is there a move-in or community fee?

  • What is your refund policy if a resident leaves unexpectedly?

Safety, Licensing & Reputation

  • Are you licensed and regulated by the state?

  • Have you had any recent citations or complaints?

  • What safety features are in place (emergency call systems, secure entries, etc.)?

  • How are grievances handled if a resident or family has a concern?

Overall Fit

  • How long has your staff been here on average?

  • What do families typically say they love most about your community?

  • Can I speak with a current resident or family member?

Being prepared with the right questions helps ensure you’re making a confident and informed decision. In addition to the answers you receive, take note of how the community feels — are staff members warm and welcoming? Do residents appear comfortable and engaged? These subtle details often speak volumes.
