Meet Jennifer Carter

I’m Jennifer Carter, founder of Star Light Senior Advisors, a senior living advisory company built on ethics, independence, and real-world experience.

My connection to this industry started long before I ever built a business.

Later in life in her 50s my mother became a manager in an assisted living facility. Through her, I saw firsthand the responsibility, compassion, and leadership required to support seniors and their families during some of life’s most emotional transitions. When I lost her suddenly, that experience stayed with me and I know she would be proud of the work I’ve built in this space.

Before entering senior care, I was a licensed real estate broker in Rhode Island, looking for a career that felt more meaningful and sustainable long-term. As I began exploring the senior living advisor industry, I spoke directly with the major franchise companies to understand how people typically got started.

What I found:

The traditional franchise model came with significant limitations:

High franchise fees — a substantial investment before even getting started
Restricted territories — your ability to expand was determined by someone else
Mandatory advertising — spending requirements with little control over the strategy
Ongoing revenue sharing — continuing to give up a portion of what you earned
Limited ownership — you were building their brand rather than your own

That wasn’t the kind of business I wanted to build.

So I chose a different path. I built my own senior living advisor business independently from the ground up, learning through real-world experience, trial and error, and years of working directly in the industry. Along the way, I refined what worked, eliminated what didn’t, and created a clear, ethical, step-by-step system designed to make building and growing the business more straightforward.

Today, every new advisor I work with benefits from the mistakes I already made and the systems I’ve already built.

Why I Do This Today

What started as my own search for a more meaningful career has grown into something much bigger. Today, I have the opportunity to help other people build independent businesses while expanding the number of knowledgeable, ethical advisors available to families who need guidance.

I don’t want the people I mentor to spend years figuring everything out the way I did. I want them to start with the knowledge, tools, systems, and support I wish I had from day one—and then build a business that is truly their own.

For me, that’s what makes this work so rewarding. It’s not just about helping someone start a business. It’s about helping them create something they can be proud of while making a genuine difference for seniors and their families.
